Neuroplasticity with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and Exercise Physiology

It has been shown when doing specific Parkinson’s Disease (PD) exercises, it can help the brain in slowing the progression of the disease and the symptoms associated. In this blog we will focus on:

  1. Neuro-restoration

  2. Neuroplasticity

  3. Neuroprotection

Neuro-restoration

Neuro-restoration is where changes occur at the cellular level, and exercise plays an important role in reducing the enzyme that breaks down the Dopamine in the brain, just as medication does. Exercise also plays a role in reducing Glutamate representation in the brain which helps inhibit the breakdown of Dopamine and thus maintain movement and slows symptoms progression in people with PD. Allows people with PD to move better as there is less dampening down of the hypothalamus in the brain.

Neuroplasticity

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s natural ability to re-wire itself. Exercise plays a role by amplifying the movement to help re-wire the brain (works best for people with stages 1-3 Parkinson’s Disease).

General gym exercise is fantastic for general health but not impacting at a neuroplasticity level (neuro-passive).

Using exercises that challenge physically and mentally will help with maintaining the neurons in the brain (neuro-active via a neuro-plastic approach).

Neuro-degenerative occurs naturally but is worse when sedentary.

Neuroprotection

There is compelling scientific evidence towards exercise having a neuro-protective effect on the brain for people with PD by maintaining the viable Dopamine producing cells. Exercise helps aid endogenous self-made Dopamine to stay in the brain for longer. Medication reduces symptoms by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down Dopamine, but it does not slow the destruction of Dopamine producing cells. Exercise is such a powerful approach in combination with medication!

In Summary

Movement is key. It has been shown that people newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease complete 30% fewer steps when compared to the general population.

Do exercises you enjoy reducing risk of developing other chronic conditions.

As Exercise Physiologist’s we can help guide you to complete specific exercises involving dual tasking, cognitive involvement, and the use of a neuroplastic approach.
